Infidelity in Marriage is Not a Modern Act

Infidelity in marriage is not a modern act.  Historically it has been considered a serious offense by many cultures, and often a serious crime and reason for punishment. In the Greco-Roman world, infidelity in marriage was penalized by stoning to death. Since then, society has evolved and the laws have changed. But in many countries it is still considered a crime. In the United States laws vary from state to state.

Although the word infidel it is used for someone who has lost his or her faith in a religious sense, it has evolved to symbolize the loss of faithfulness to their spouse in their marriage, the abandonment of faithfulness to the vows they both pledged in their mutual relationship.

Many books have been written about infidelity in marriage, such as the best-seller novel “Anna Karenina” by Leo Tolstoy.  It has also become a popular theme in movies, theatre plays and the music industry.

Regardless of socio-economic status or ethnic and religious background, infidelity in marriage causes great strains and devastation in a marriage relationship, including issues of trust, anxiety, high stress and a feeling of loss. However, it is important to know that there is a way to revitalize a marriage after infidelity and that there are people who can help get your life back on track. Understanding and forgiveness are part of the healing process. Negative emotions and symptoms must be addressed as well as the willingness to plan for the future. A marriage that survives infidelity will become stronger. People recover from infidelity in marriage every day.
