Marriage and Family: Seeing the Whole Picture

If you and your spouse are in the midst of a marriage crisis, you are certainly aware of the emotional strain that it places on both of you.  Unfortunately, you are not the only ones affected.  It is important to realize the emotional impact those struggles are having on your children and family.  Don’t forget that they are in the middle of this very complex situation and are involved and invested in your marriage as well.  Their world revolves around yours.  If you are upset and worried, chances are that it’s showing in your relationships with other family members and not just your spouse.

In your home it’s important to maintain the proper balance of providing security for the children while acknowledging there are marriage problems that you and your spouse are trying to work through.  Don’t try to isolate your children.  Give them reassurance that you are working to save your marriage. Be clear about your intentions to keep the family together and safe.

Some members of your extended family probably know about your marriage problems to some extent, whether they see it in your behavior or you have told them already. Keep them involved as you see fit.  As you share your feelings with them, don’t talk badly about your spouse or try to get them to take sides.  It will only create more problems within your marriage that may last longer than your marriage crisis. If you’re having a hard time coping, share it with them and let them know that it’s not anything they’re doing. They’ll appreciate being kept in the loop and you’ll appreciate having someone to talk to.

Every family is different, and every family resolves problems in their own way. Knowing the right course of action can be very difficult especially in the midst of marital problems.  If you’re feeling overwhelmed and need more guidance than friends or family can provide, there is professional marriage help available. Many couples find that marriage counseling and marriage workshops are the most private and effective way of working through issues in their marriage. Don’t be slow or indecisive in seeking professional help!
