Saving Your Marriage for the Children

“Daddy’s coming home!” squealed the children, too excited to say more. After long months of bitter fighting, thousands of dollars in attorney’s fees, and polarized family members, the young couple decided to give it one last shot. “I’m here for my daughters, that’s it!” snapped Bob, hardly looking at his wife, Susan.

Divorce wasn’t new to Bob or Susan. Both their parents had divorced and turned their childhoods into bitter fighting bouts over shared custody and visitation rights. As kids growing up, Susan and Bob always wondered, “Was it my fault mom and dad split up?”

Now married, they were passing on the same hurt and brokenness to their precious children. How could they end repeating the destructive patterns that had damaged them and made it so difficult to experience a good marriage? Hearing there was help at A New Beginning workshop, the angry couple came.

Bob and Susan learned how to effectively communicate, interacted with other couples in similar situations, and spent time with each other. A New Beginning weekend began the breakthrough and a turnaround marriage was the outcome. Learning that having any one of the nine good reasons to stay committed was enough to save their marriage, Bob and Susan grabbed hold of their ”for the kids’ sake” and won a great relationship.

“It was amazing!” beamed Susan. “At the workshop, we began communicating effectively for the first time in years. We actually worked on problems in our marriage without yelling at each other.” Bob agreed. “I learned how to really listen to my wife and make our marriage work!”

Now their girls won’t be part of the 80% of kids of divorced couples that don’t do well. Susan and Bob are together and working on their marriage. He is a daddy looking forward to walking all four of his daughters down the aisle to give them away to wonderful marriages he and Susan are modeling today.
